10 Ways to Love Thy Ladies on Galentine's Day
Themes for a Twin Cities Galentine’s Day that Leslie Knope would RSVP to—from crafts and wine to a puppy kissing booth
Warm up with your gal pals beside the fire at Surly Brewing Co.

Whether we’re single, married, “it’s complicated,” or anywhere in between, one thing will always remain: our gals. They’re the ones who hold our hands during tough breakups, pull all-nighters to binge-watch old seasons of Orange is the New Black, and continue going out with us despite our tequila-shot-induced dance moves (I know I’m not the only one).
So let’s show our lady warriors a little extra love this Galentine’s Day with one of these party themes.
Whether you’re a beer fanatic or a wine snob, there’s nothing better than getting the girls together and hitting your favorite brewery or wine bar. Get cozy at Dangerous Man Brewing Company or Surly Brewing Co. with something dark, light, or completely out of the ordinary (think strawberry shake beer). Looking to get your wine on? Sip fireside at the Riverview Wine Bar—and, yes, there are snacks. Can’t choose between wine and coffee? You don’t have to at the Sisters’ Sludge Coffee and Wine Bar. Come for the espresso, stay for the Prosecco.
Dinner and a Show
Show Minneapolis’ abundant theater scene some appreciation. Get a bite to eat at Mercy Bar & Dining Room, Crave, Seven Steakhouse, or any of the many restaurants in the West Downtown Cultural District before heading to Potted Potter, playing nearby at Pantages Theatre. Otherwise, make it fancy and French with Meritage in St. Paul, followed by Shen Yun at the Ordway. Shakespeare's As You Like It plays at the Guthrie, surrounded by dining options like Spoonriver, Zen Box Izakaya, and Kindee Thai Restaurant. Not far in Minneapolis, Edwards Dessert Kitchen also offers amazing sweets.
No better way to get through the dark days of winter than with laughter. And thanks to the booming Twin Cities comedy scene, laughter is pretty easy to find. The Orpheum, Brave New Workshop, and HUGE Improv Theater are calling your name this Galentine’s Day. Check out the Valentine’s Comedy Jam at the Orpheum at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, where Red Grant, Jordan Jackson, and others perform standup. Catch Love and Other Social Diseases at Brave New Workshop starting Thursday, Feb. 14, for a comedy improv show about dating, relationships, and finding love in the era of dating apps. Stop by HUGE Improv at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13 (Galentine’s Day proper), for HUGE Wednesday, a weekly show featuring four improv groups.
Art with the Gals
We all love art in some form. My personal favorite form is “free.” Get your artsy girlfriends together for an art-themed day on a budget. Head over to the Minneapolis Institute of Art to view globe-spanning collections for free. Feb. 10 through 15, visitors will be given a heart Valentine to place in front of their favorite artwork. For a little extra Galentine’s magic, learn how to make your own heart-shaped screen prints at the hands-on studio from 1 to 3 p.m., Feb. 12 through 15, also for free. Another museum to check out with the girls is the Walker Art Center. On Thursday, Feb. 14, the Walker will host Be My Walker Valentine, a free event for people to mingle, listen to poetry, and more. Otherwise, get crafty at home with Crafting with Feminism, a book loaded with girl-powered art projects. Buy the book on Amazon for $10, pick up some supplies, and get crafting.
Escape the treacherous Minnesota tundra and enjoy the balmy greenhouses at the Como Conservatory. If you love walking around the warm, humid domes filled with palm trees, flowers, and peaceful fountains, you’ll want to make a reservation for the best dinner spot in town. Get the girls together for the Galentine’s Day dinner on Wednesday, Feb. 13, in the Como Conservatory. Guests can choose to be seated in the Sunken Garden, where they will be surrounded by vibrant azaleas, or the Palm Dome for a lush, green atmosphere. Dinner is served at 5:30 or 8 p.m.
We all need our gal pals, but you know what else we need? Puppies! Steal some puppy kisses at the Carver Junk Company Puppy Kissing Booth on Sunday, Feb. 10. For a donation of $1 or more, you’ll get a smooch from a pup that will surely top your best kiss list. All money raised will go to the Minnesota Pit Bull Rescue, and if you’re interested in adopting one of these adorable pups, you can learn more about the adoption process from active fosters and rescue volunteers.
Find Your Zen
Enjoy some relaxation time this Galentine’s Day with some yoga classes. On Sunday, Feb. 10, you can namaste your way to Centennial Lakes in Edina for some snowga (snow yoga). After an hour of snowga with Corepower Yoga, enjoy a beermosa from Lift Bridge Brewing Co. and brunch at Pinstripes. If the indoors are more your speed this winter, try a yoga class at Orchestra Hall. At 10 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10, you and the ladies can practice yoga while enjoying live music performed by members of the orchestra. If you’re a yoga pro, you can put those skills and muscles to the test at the Yoga Sculpt and Self-Defense Workshop at Corepower Yoga Minnetonka on Wednesday, Feb. 13. With so many options, your chakras will be opening in no time.
Your girls know you love them, so maybe it’s time you show yourself some love, too. Try one of many spas around the Twin Cities—like Lili Salon Spa Galleria in Edina, Indulge in White Bear Lake, Spa Sweet or HAUS Salon in Minneapolis, and more—for a massage, facial, manicure, pedicure, or a new 'do. Once you’re done being pampered—oh, wait a minute—you’re not done yet. Head home for a night of baking with the girls to celebrate. Try one of these recipes for white chocolate raspberry cheesecake, sweetheart cupcakes, or chocolate soufflé.
Walk the Red Carpet
Oscars season is upon us, which means the theaters are loaded with some great flicks. Round up your movie buffs and catch some of the latest buzz-worthy films. From On the Basis of Sex to Miss Bala, it’s the perfect time to catch some great leading ladies with your own ladies. Want to trade in the ball gown for your favorite flannel PJs? Stay in and marathon some of your favorite movies. Whether you’re into classics, comedies, or—my personal favorite—horror, a night at home with the girls, freshly popped popcorn, and a bottle of wine never fails. Take that, Oscars!
Beat the Cold
Show the cold weather who’s boss. If you and your ladies are feeling cooped up, bundle up and get some fresh air with a winter hike or even fat tire biking. Hike one of the many trails of Hidden Falls Regional Park, Theodore Wirth Regional Park, or Fort Snelling State Park without leaving the Twin Cities. We’re known for our avid biking scene, so it’s no surprise that fat tire bike rentals are all over the place. Find yours at Angry Catfish Bicycle + Coffee Bar or Tangletown Bike Shop. Just don’t forget to wear layers.
