At the Glensheen Gala, you can explore the gardens, see normally closed-off spots, and relish in the after party along Lake Superior

Glensheen Mansion isn’t only the 39-room Jacobean mansion in Duluth; it’s also the 12-acre estate complete with a creek, manicured gardens, what was once the largest privately owned pier on Lake Superior, and more. This year’s Glensheen Gala: Unlocked is titled Secret Garden Party, and it focuses on the grounds. Plus, since it’s on Aug. 18, the gardens are at their peak. Visitors also get full range of the mansion including sections that are normally closed off like the silver safe, and for the first time ever, they can explore the second floor of the carriage house. As you wander, be on the lookout for surprises in the garden and one or two secret “shot in the dark” bar spots.
With such a beautiful and historic venue as Glensheen, the gala is much more than a cocktail hour, and the hors d'oeuvres don’t disappoint, either. Northern Waters Smokehaus went British Isles, with items like English hand pies with lamb, peas, mint, and potatoes; cucumber cups with fresh pea soup; a selection of macaroons; and Stilton puffs with smokehaus pancetta and candied walnuts. Each guest gets one complimentary drink, and there are cash bars throughout the estate.
The gala is from 7 to 10 p.m., but afterward, the party keeps going at the Lake Superior Beach Club, which is new this summer. Enjoy the fair summer night with some of the best views of the lake and unwind with games, hammocks, bonfires, and more.
