Creative workshops make life more Instagrammable

LAB Creative workshops make life more Instagrammable Class is in session at LAB—sans the traumatic frog-dissection flashbacks. At the Loring Park studio, bar carts and cake stands sub in for Bunsen burners and test tubes during a series of creative workshops that take place each season.

After nearly a year of offering do-it-yourself design classes at Prime and Polish, her home décor boutique, Jessica Moriarty joined forces with graphic designer Mollie Windmiller to build LAB. Here, workshop participants can learn to be better at whatever the two owners dream up. “We want people to step away from their normal environments and escape into creativity,” says Moriarty.

That innovation can come in any form: Experts are invited to give crash courses in everything from the fine art of floral arrangements (Munster Rose designers provide the blooms and the know-how) to throwing the perfect cocktail party (a la White Peacock Events). And don’t mistake the workshops for an overwhelming collection of Pinterest ideas: The courses are intimate, topping out at 20 students, and personalized—from placecards designed by Windmiller to step-by-step Photoshop instruction binders, no detail is too small.

“You’re actually getting creative and bringing these ideas to life,” says Windmiller. “We’re teaching a skill that people can bring home to throw their own parties, or do their own Photoshopping, and there’s so much value in that.”

Moriarty and Windmiller plan to adapt classes to match the time of year, highlighting seasonal drinks and flowers. This fall, also watch for a Beauty LAB where handmade cosmetics will be the project du jour, a Collage Art LAB led by graphic designer Ashley Barlow, and a gift-wrapping session that will simultaneously boost your holiday cred and spread some cheer for a local charity.

Autumn classes will highlight seasonal drinks and flowers, and include a gift-wrapping session that will simultaneously boost your holiday cred and spread some cheer for a local charity.
