Holiday Volunteer Opportunities Around the Twin Cities
Looking for a way to express gratitude this holiday season? From serving the hungry to delivering food to seniors, Minnesotans have had a long tradition of giving back to their community. During this holiday season, check out some of the ways you can volunteer your time and efforts to those in need. Civil War veteran Robert Ingersoll said it best: "We rise by lifting others."
Open Arms of Minnesota
The mission of Open Arms of Minnesota is to deliver food to those struggling with life-threatening illnesses. Open Arms of Minnesota currently has a huge need for delivery volunteers this holiday season. If you are unable to deliver meals the week of Thanksgiving, meal delivery shifts happen in December Monday through Friday. New volunteers are always welcome. Find out more information on their website.
Aside from the bell ringers that we see at our local malls (and in the skyway) around the holidays, Salvation Army also recruits volunteers for meal preparation and meal serving. There are volunteer opportunities sorted by closest center to your zip code on their website.
VEAP Holiday Meal Program
Each year, Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People (VEAP) delivers hot meals to fixed income seniors and disabled adults. Register for the volunteer program on the VEAP website to reserve your spot to deliver a meal and serve as a friendly face to those who need a smile.
Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly
Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly aims to relieve isolation and loneliness of elders by providing a nourishing meal and companionship. Volunteer opportunities include driving elders to the dinner location, working as a server, or being part of the kitchen crew. There are currently volunteer opportunities on Christmas Eve Day. There's a volunteer orientation December 5. Many of the volunteer spots are filling up so make sure to sign up soon on the website to secure your spot.
Meals on Wheels
Sign up to deliver meals through Meals on Wheels—sign up with coworkers or families. If you are unable to donate your time, Meals on Wheels also accepts donations on their website. Your donation ensures that senior citizens will receive a warm and nutritious meal this holiday season.
