Brews and Views at the Hopped Up Caribou Festival

There's no better place to tie the knot than at a craft beer festival, and if you're not into that, you can cliff climb, too

Minnesota is known for having some sudtastic craft brew festivals. The Twin Cities Bacon and Beer Classic, the Summer and Winter Beer Dabbler, and Schell’s Brewery Oktoberfest—just to name a few—all offer hop hounds glass after glass of the malt-infused refreshments. But perhaps the most unique of these is the Hopped Up Caribou Festival.

Taking place Friday, July 13, through Sunday, July 15, at Caribou Highlands Lodge in Lutsen, Hopped Up Caribou Festival is a three-day celebration of all things brew, music, and adventure.

Nearly 30 brewers, including sultans of suds such as Surly Brewing Co., Fulton, and Indeed Brewing Company will be pouring piquant potables for the taste buds of all to enjoy. In addition to this lineup of libations, North Shore Winery—less than a mile down the road from Caribou Highlands Lodge—will be offering tours and tastings for those who want to switch it up or simply prefer drinks of the vine variety.

And if outdoor adventures are your thing, you have come to the right festival. Taking advantage of the North Shore’s stellar scenery, the Hopped Up Caribou Festival offers thirsty transients chances to get out and explore it all with guided cliff—yes, cliff—climbing, a canoe trip along the Poplar River, an aerial gondola ride to the top of Moose Mountain, miles of biking and hiking trails, and even an alpine slide. It’s like your passport to a well-deserved nap—which you are also encouraged to do.

What’s a party without music? Get your lyrical fix on Friday night and Saturday with the tunes of Timmy Haus and Big Wave Dave & The Ripples as you sip your pints and chow down on a dinner provided by Moguls Grille & Tap Room (Friday) and a pig roast dinner (Saturday).

Finally, if you’ve ever wanted the thrill that comes with tying the knot Vegas style—and, really, who doesn’t—Hopped Up Caribou Festival will be offering love birds the chance to say “I do” or renew their vows in quick, 15-minute ceremonies on Saturday complete with a 45-minute couples massage, two-night honeymoon Caribou Highlands getaway (to be redeemed within 12 months), and a bevy of bonuses for the entire wedding party.
