St. Paul's Phalen Freeze Fest

Published:

The days in February and March can blur together as a never-ending stretch of winter if you don't quietly, calmly, and respectfully step away from the TV and get outside. Yes, it can be cold, and yes, the roads can be icy, and yes, the snow has to be shoveled, bu there is so much beauty in winter if you seek it out.

This Saturday, appreciate the season at Phalen Freeze Fest, a free family-friendly event from 5-8 p.m. at St. Paul's Phalen Park. (More specifically, at the Picnic Pavilion, 1600 Phalen Drive.) According to the St. Paul Parks and Rec website, the event is suitable for those "at least 1 but less than 121."

Join a storyteller on a StoryWalk—along a trail lit by luminary candles—as she tells the Ojibwe legend of Shingebiss, a determined duck who refused to be defeated by an ominous character called the Winter Maker. Help dramatize the story with parade-style puppets and masks, created by area school kids. Other fun activities include flashlight geocaching, ice fishing, stargazing through a spotting scope, and cooking over a fire.

Food will be available for sale (while supplies last). The event is held entirely outdoors, so dress appropriately.
