There are only so many vacation days that they can take in a given year. However, there are so many trips that can be taken in a weekend or even in a day. Here are some of the Minnesota Monthly staff's favorite weekend trips and Minnesota destinations to inspire your own travels in 2019.

Some travel ideas to start your 2019 ...

"Sugar Lake Lodge with its crystal clear water." —Arthur Morrissey, director of marketing, events, and partnerships

"Gooseberry Falls! I love the trails and the simplicity. My husband proposed to me there and it has always been special for us." —Katie Hickman, marketing and public relations manager)

"Duluth and the North Shore. After all the years I spent around Lake Superior, it never ceases to blow my mind. Equally majestic and furious, it is something I couldn't take for granted if I tried." —Jared Quade, office manager

"Duluth, specifically the Inn on Lake Superior. It serves as an amazing home base for outdoor adventures year round." —Tammy Galvin, publisher

"I enjoy the road trip more than the destination, especially when it involves stopping by a winery!" —Amanda Wadenson, production traffic coordinator

"Lake Itasca, where the Mississippi River starts. You can wade about a quarter mile down the mouth of the river, and in the summer the water is really nice." —Rae Heitkamp, digital design manager

"I prefer the most underrated city in the country—Milwaukee [Wisconsin]! Great restaurants, an up-and-coming craft-beer scene, theater and museums, and truly friendly locals make it an inexpensive and fun getaway." —Matthew Drewek, event manager

"I always try to make time for a day trip to New Ulm in the summer. Downtown New Ulm, especially Minnesota Street, is so cute with my favorite coffee shop ever (Lola - An American Bistro) and lots of fun boutiques. It's a perfect way to spend a Saturday!"  —Katie Ballalatak, associate editor

"Lake Pepin! It's quiet and beautiful with the bluffs and lake." —Katy Pitts, event sales representative

"Otter Tail County: Plenty of fun stuff to do, friends to visit, lots of lakes to explore, and my parents are always happy to babysit." —Casie Beldo, senior art director
