Celebrate Art Museum Day

An interior gallery at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts

Minneapolis Institute of Arts

May is Minnesota Museum’s Month, a third-annual recognition of our state’s nearly 600 cultural institutions. However, if you like your cultural celebrations to be a bit more specific, get out this weekend for Art Museum Day on Sunday, May 18.

For the fifth year, the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis Institute of Arts and Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota will participate in the Association of Art Director’s (AAMD) Art Museum Day, which also coincides with International Art Museum Day. The annual celebration emphasizes the essential role that museums play in their communities, highlights the visual arts in society, and provides new opportunities for audiences to participate in many programs. Each of the museums will offer discounts and special one-day-only amenities throughout the day, and invite visitors to share their experiences during the day on social media with the hashtag #ArtMuseumDay.

Minneapolis Institute of Arts
2400 Third Avenue South, Minneapolis
Gallery hours on Sunday, May 18: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Visitors will receive 10 percent off all purchases in the Store at MIA. Members of the museum will receive an additional 10 percent off. Catch the final day of Matisse: Masterworks from the Baltimore Museum of Art, an exhibit of art spanning six decades of the artist’s career. Also on view is Finland: Designed Environments, a wide-ranging exhibit featuring Finnish design from the past 15 years.

Weisman Art Museum
333 East River Road, Minneapolis
Gallery hours on Sunday, May 18: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Visitors will receive a 10 percent discount on items purchased in the WAM shop. Sunday will provide your last chance to take in Siberia: Imagined and Reimagined, a photography exhibit that spans from 1870 to the present. WAM@20: Paper is the second gallery exhibition of the yearlong WAM@20 celebrating the 20th anniversary of the iconic Frank Gehry-designed building.

Walker Art Center
1750 Hennepin Avenue, Minneapolis
Gallery hours on Sunday, May 18: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In celebration of Art Museum Day, visitors will receive free gallery admission. It is a good chance to see Hopper Drawing: A Painter’s Process, the first major exhibition to focus the drawings and creative process of this iconic 20th century artist Eward Hopper. Other gallery exhibits are sure to challenge your mind and stir your soul as well.

And again, if you are out and about, you should also plan on attending GrillFest at the Depot. Full disclosure: It is our company’s event. That doesn’t mean it still won’t be fun!
