Happenings at the Itasca State Park Headwaters

Over the past few weeks Rachel and John have been discussing what to eat—this week on Moveable Feast, they cover summer travel destinations.

Each July here at Minnesota Monthly, we explore a must–see location for any Minnesotan’s bucket list—this year, it’s the headwaters of the Mississippi at Itasca State Park (check out our entire Itasca State Park vacation guide).

Surprisingly, the headwaters are rather small—with a hop and a skip you can get across without dipping your toes in the water.

Surrounded by old-growth pines, there are plenty of opportunities for hiking, biking, and canoeing. To capture all of the scenic views, venture to the top of the old fire tower.

If you are looking to spend the night—without roughing it in the woods—stay at the CCC-era Douglas Lodge one of the other quaint two-person cabins available.
