Family Fun: Emma Krumbee's in Belle Plaine

Published:

My family and I recently traveled down to Belle Plaine to Emma Krumbee’s Apple Orchard for the Annual Scarecrow Festival. It’s a perfect little spot for families to enjoy the fall weather, while letting the kids run around in the hay and dirt. (In my personal opinion, I think kids under 10 will have the most fun.)

During the festival, more than 100 scarecrows created by people of all ages are on display for judging. For $5 each (ages 2 and under are free), you can view the scarecrows, take a tractor ride out to the pumpkin patch, ride a kiddie train, play in a hay stack, pick apples, ride horses and camels, and enjoy the playground. And you can purchase the pumpkins and apples you pick.

Emma Krumbee’s footprint is smaller than we expected—everything from apple picking to the pumpkin patch are very close in proximity. This makes it very easy to navigate with small children; though with our toddler we’re happy we brought along the umbrella stroller, too. There’s a general store that sells trinkets, pies, fudge, and the best caramel apple I’ve ever tasted. An Emma Krumbee’s Restaurant is right on-site as well, so you can easily make a day of it.

If you’re traveling from the North, on the way to and from Emma Krumbee’s, right off 169, is Sever’s Corn Maze. Stop in for some more family fun and travel the Midwest’s largest corn maze; this year it’s shaped like a space shuttle.
