Farmers' Market Season Is Underway

Published:

This morning I woke up with sore hamstrings and lingering dirt under my fingernails. That’s not a sign that I’ve been rock climbing, it’s a sign that I’ve been working in my garden. Yes, spring is here, and that means it’s time for Twin Cities farmers’ markets!

This past weekend, the Lyndale Minneapolis Farmers' Market was open for business selling potted plants, fresh asparagus, and rhubarb, among other items. This weekend, the Nicollet Mall Farmers' Market will open, and Mill City Market will follow shortly after, opening on May 8.

Farmers’ markets are a great opportunity to get your hands on the freshest products available from local producers. Take some time to speak with the producers at the market to learn more about where they’re from, the farming practices they use, and why their products are special.

Not all farmers’ markets are the same, so you may need to shop around to find the market that suits you best. For a list of farmers’ markets in the Twin Cities, including locations and hours, visit the Land Stewardship Project’s Web site.

Head to the farmers’ market, take the opportunity to buy a small amount of something you’ve never eaten before, ask the person selling the item for preparation tips, and head home to eat something super fresh and tasty!
