Jonathan Gold is not Los Angeles’s typical Pulitzer Prize-winning restaurant critic. Sure, he’s reviewed high-end and up-and-coming spots generally frequented by the wealthy and elite, but his passion lies in the underground foodie culture of unassuming strip mall joints and food trucks. He goes where most critics would turn up their noses—and finds some of the best cuisine in L.A. along the way.

Rachel and John will discuss Gold’s documentary, “City of Gold,” which follows his journey to uncover hidden gems. He takes time to get to know the chefs he reviews—many of whom are international immigrants with their own stories to tell. He’s not afraid to eat the spiciest soup at a Thai restaurant, and he knows each ingredient well enough to explain to foodies and non-foodies alike why it’s so good. “City of Gold” leaves no culinary stone unturned and takes viewers through a journey that just might inspire them to follow Gold’s lead and try hole-in-the-wall spots in their own cities.
