Freezer Foods for Easy Meals

This week on Moveable Feast, Minnesota Monthly editor Rachel Hutton and MPR host John Birge talk about what brings us together when it starts getting uncomfortable to go outside: food, friends, and gifts.

Now that we’ve hit freezing temperatures, it’s a good time to talk about making foods that are easy to freeze. Rachel says that her group of friends gets together to make big batches of food—tamales, ravioli, pierogies, and Japanese dumplings called gyoza. Everyone makes enough to share a meal and send some home with friends.

If that sounds like too much work, Rachel has a list of local restaurants and delis where you can buy all kinds of delicious frozen goods: La Loma in the Midtown Global Market makes great tamales that are also sold at Kowalski’s and Everett’s Foods and Meats; Broders’ and Cosetta are good places to find ravioli; and Kramarczuk’s is the best spot for pierogies. Rachel suggests looking in Asian markets for frozen Gyoza.

Also, in the spirit of giving, all of these things are perfect foods to drop off for homebound folks who might be recovering from an illness or caring for a new baby.
