Dining Dish: Eats on Wheels, Wheel Shaped Food, and Brews

The new fleet of food trucks are officially out in force. There are so many I’m looking forward to trying. My first St. Paul truck of the season was the Wacky Wing Wagon. I’m always skeptical when “wacky” is involved, but these were actually some serious wings. Crackling skin was wrapped around succulent meat and the whole mess was seasoned with a dry Jerk rub. They weren’t as spicy as I like my jerk, but I could have asked for a better bite of chicken skin. Now is the time to get out there and eat curbside!

Today is 612 Brew Day. How they picked the date, I’ll never know. Mayor Hodge made it official that the city of Minneapolis is celebrating the first anniversary for the Northeast brewhouse with the fantastic indoor/outdoor space and that Rated R brew I can’t get enough of. They’ll be serving a firkin of Rated R that’s been steeped in whiskey oak, $3 pints, $8 flights, and there’s a whole lineup of music including Jake Jones, Local Rhythm, and Kingsview. They’ll also be donating a portion of the proceeds (6.12%—there’s that number again!) to charity. Lulu’s food truck will be on hand for all your food pairing delights.

However, if you prefer to dine indoors during the workweek, Cafe Zentral is set to make their debut Monday July 14th for Bastille Day. This is the next phase of the new project for Russell and Desta Klein that began with the opening of Brasserie Zentral inside the historic Soo Line building. Your skyway lunch game is about to be one upped. (Sorry, Potbelly, you know it’s true.)

Grain Stack is going dark for the summer. The Stock and Badge-owned restaurant (a partnership between Dogwood Coffee and Rustica) inside the Minnesota Arts Institute has decided to take the warm season off. Half Pint, the family friendly-geared spot and the Dogwood Coffee bar inside MIA remain open.

If you’re feeling sleepy this Saturday, there’s a Caffeine Crawl a’brewing. Participants will gather at Peace Coffee and then take off to sample some of the finest cups from around the Cities. They’ll be hitting Angry Catfish, Bull Run, Dogwood inside the Arts Institute, Gray Duck Chai, Groundswell, and more. You can visit Caffeine Crawl’s website for a full list of stops and to buy the tickets (ranging in price from $24-27.)

One more opening (I’m hiding it down here for all of your loyal readers. Don’t tell the others, but you're my favorite) is Bogart’s Doughnut Co. on 36th and Bryant Ave. Perhaps you’ve heard of Anne Rucker’s divine doughnut creations before? Her fried beauties are packed with heavening fillings like a vanilla bean buttercream that will blow your mind. Her new little shop has been running to keep up with demand. So far, she’s sold out every single day she’s been open, with lengthy lines to boot. So, you might want to make a note to stop by and see her in a month or two. Just don’t tell anybody about it! This will be our little secret.
