Dining Dish: Haute Dish, State Fair Foods, and More

Last night I was able stop in at Haute Dish, or rather HauteQue SoulHut to get a taste of their smokin’ menu. If you’re a fan of succulent meat, squishy white bread, and a mess o’ tangy sauce, you’ll want to monitor the reservations available while the pop up lasts through this week. Chef Landon Schoenefeld has always excelled at taking a new turn on comfort foods while twisting them through a fine dining prism. With this menu, comfort food is just soul-sustainingly comforting. Wings are spicy with crisp skins and a bologna sandwich is served on King’s Hawaiian rolls with house-made cheese sauce that is so decadently awesome, they could sell it by the jar-load and make a killing.

The newest foods for the State Fair were announced yesterday. Food adventures abound with enticing new tastes like bacon wrapped turkey legs, waffle cones stuffed with fried chicken bits, and beer gelato. There’s something for everyone from the baffling gluten-free beer battered corn dog and dessert salami to the likely easy hits like snow ribbons and Johnny Pops. This weekend is packed with events from the PRIDE Beer Dabbler inside Loring Park, with pairings of local brews and food trucks that is always a delicious good time. On Sunday the trucks will be out again with the Minnesota Food Truck Fair in Uptown. This year they’ve expanded both the hours and the area they’ll be covering. Also on Sunday is our chance to send Travail off on their best summer vacation ever with their Prevailed Travail block party at Lakeview Terrace Park in Robbinsdale. There are still a few tickets available for $10. Everyone should be good and sunburned come Monday morning.

Over on the east side of the cities, Tongue in Cheek is now open at 989 Payne Avenue in St. Paul. Affordable small plates ready for sharing are made from sustainably sourced ingredients. With these guys, Ward 6, and Cook, this part of town is looking more delicious all the time. Somebody should form some kind of all day eating crawl between the three. Wouldn’t that be fun?

Back in Minneapolis, it’s the end of an era as Bradstreet Crafthouse says goodbye to their original location. I think the move into the erstwhile Rye space will be a great fit, but we’re going to have to go several months without their brand of incredible cocktails. Meanwhile, their sibling location in St. Paul, Rival House is edging towards opening and I’ve heard those doors will be ready to welcome you next weekend.
