A Sweet Preview of Union Depot's Holiday Bake Sale

A sweet kickoff to the Holiday Bake Sale at Union Depot

The holidays may be a ways off, but Union Depot is gearing up to host its second annual Holiday Bake Sale on December 6th. The event brings together some of the Twin Cities’ top bakeries to benefit Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry Campaign, which raises awareness about child hunger, brings nutritious food to kids in need, and educates families about cooking healthy meals that won’t break the bank.

The bake sale will kick off Union Depot’s jam-packed schedule of holiday events, but a preview earlier this week offered a taste of what’s to come. This year’s event will highlight Union Depot’s new Bee Line Honey, produced from the station’s own rooftop beehives. Mademoiselle Miel, beekeeper and crafter of sinfully rich honey bonbons, oversees the hives. Sweet but not too floral, it will be ideal for adding to tea or spreading on toast as mornings grow increasingly darker and chillier.

The honey will make its public debut at the bake sale, and I got a sneak peek earlier this week, when several of the participating bakeries used it to whip up some special treats. St. Paul coffee shop Groundswell brought a batch of Salted Honey Caramel Cheesecake Cupcakes to the table (they’re some of the bakery’s best-sellers, which head baker Megan Greulich calls her “children”), and Birchwood Café’s Honey Pistachio Bars (sweet with a kick of salt and nuttiness) exemplified why Birchwood was recently named one of our Bests Of the Cities. And a batch of too-cute miniature Fig, Honey, and Walnut Whoopie Pies by small indie purveyor Petite Sweets reminded me that I need to stop by the opening of the Linden Hills Winter Market this weekend to check out more of their fall flavors.

Keep an eye out for more Holiday Bake Sale details and ticket availability on Union Depot's website, and learn more about Bee Line Honey—a sweet, giftable treat for the upcoming season.
