The Frozen Aisle, Local Style

Move over craft beers—craft ice creams are a hit with the locals come hot days. The Twin Cities can cure any sweet tooth with classics like Grand Ole Creamery, Sebastian Joe’s, Sonny’s Ice Cream, and Izzy’s—but now you can get your fix from the comfort of your own freezer. This week on Moveable Fest, MnMo editor Rachel Hutton and MPR’s John Birge talk grocery store and co-cop frozen treats.

Rachel suggests Castle Rock, an organic dairy brand from Wisconsin. This ice cream hits the mark with fresh products in well-loved flavors such as sweet cream or chocolate—straightforward and delicious.

Another new start-up to keep your eye out for is Sweet Science. This funky brand is creating lab-worthy flavor combinations like sweet corn blueberry and a stout oat crunch. If you are up for the adventure, they even have an olive oil concoction.

If popsicles are more your thing, reach for Jonny Pops at Lunds & Byerlys or Kowalski’s. Started by a handful of St. Olaf grads, the local venture is creating gourmet frozen fruit and cream bars—a lick worthy treat for any kids and adults alike.
