Fit for a Queen

WHAT: Princess Diana the Musical
WHERE: Cabaret Theater in Camp Bar, St. Paul.
WHEN: 7 p.m.
You know a historical figure has truly landed in the pantheon when there’s a musical made about her life (Evita, anyone?). And so up next is the beloved Princess Diana; this Actors Theater production follows the People’s Princess through her journey from unknown teen to one of the most famous women in the world. Learn more at actorsmn.org/princess.

WHEN: 4 p.m.
Halloween is already one of our most interactive holidays (when else do you open your door to strangers demanding food, except on certain football Sundays?); bring art into the mix at Public Functionary’s Great Pumpkin event. Spooky music, face-painting stations, and video and photo booths will all be set within a dazzling display of glowing Jack-o-Lanterns, providing great photo ops and fun for the family. Learn more at publicfunctionary.org.

A Not-So-Clumsy Show

WHAT: The Clumsy Man
WHERE: Open Eye Figure Theatre, Mpls.
WHEN: 7:30 p.m.
Inspired by the life of fairy tale writer H.C. Andersen (the way-pre-Walt Disney tale spinner behind The Little Mermaid and The Princess and the Pea, among a bevy of others), this show incorporates the author’s writings with dance, mask, puppetry, and more to tell the story of a misfit with a big imagination. Note: this show is “culturally adventurous” and recommended for those 16 and up—it’s also a new work at one of the most rewarding and adventuresome theaters in the Twin Cities. Learn more at openeyetheatre.org.

Saturday, November 2

Attacked by Art

WHAT: Art Attack 2013
WHERE: The Northrup King Building, Mpls.
WHEN: 12 p.m.
It’s the hippest gallery crawl in Minneapolis at the Northrup King Building in the heart of the Northeast Arts District. This weekend-long event lets you see 250 artists at work in the huge space, check out their private studios, and buy original art directly from its creators. From photography to jewelry to custom furniture, all kinds of media will be represented and, if you’re thinking ahead (like us), can make for perfect holiday gifts. Learn more at northrupkingbuilding.com.

Sunday, November 3

Whodunit?

WHAT: The Murderer Did It!
WHERE: Southern Theater, Mpls.
WHEN: 10 p.m.
It’s a moody mstery kind of weekend—perfect timing for the 2013 Twin Cities Horror Festival at the Southern Theater. This original murder mystery presented by Four Humors serves up seven strangers who find themselves caught in a web of lies—and it’s up to them to figure out who’s killing them off one by one. We bet it’s the last guy left (hey, it worked for The Usual Suspects). Learn more at tchorrorfestival.com.

Sunday, November 3

Time for an Epic

WHAT: Les Miserables
WHERE: Bloomington Civic Theatre
WHEN: 2 p.m.
Nothing less than one of the greatest stories ever told, in the musical theater or otherwise —that of Jean Valjean and his tale of injustice, release, and his search for redemption amid revolution in France and an aching search for love and what’s right. Dieter Bierbrauer, one of the great voices on the Twin Cities theater scene and no slouch in the charisma department, plays Valjean as part of a big ensemble cast. Learn more at btacmn.org.
