Liv & Reed Salon Gets the High-Design Treatment

Growing up in small-town Minnesota, the local salon was a practical space cluttered with magazines--hardly the epitome of high fashion. But today’s salons are growing more and more stylized, and some are beautifying their spaces with the help of professional designers and brand specialists. Take HAUS Salon, the high-design space that was created by Twin Cities interior designer Jonathan Gomez-Whitney (to whom we gave a best-of nod in 2011), with branding by internationally-renowned graphic designer Michael Cina and Kate Iverson.

Another new salon concept taking a design-oriented approach to their space and branding is Liv & Reed Salon, which opened recently in Lake Calhoun Center on Excelsior Boulevard. It too boasts branding by Cina and Iverson as well as interiors designed by Iverson and Mike Bishop of Bishop/Iverson, a design and creative duo (formerly of Permanent ADG) who have worked closely with award-winning contemporary art gallery Public Functionary. Accordingly, the space--if you were to take out all the styling stations--could stand-in for a contemporary art gallery, with its colorful, graphic art (including abstract imagery of hair strands) and minimal white space. They also hand-built custom furniture and shelving for the space, and created all of the artwork on the walls.

The salon’s owners, hair stylist Mitsue Yang Thanadabout and her brother-in-law Brian Yang Hoffman, bring a mix of salon experience and business savvy to their new business. Thanadabout has been doing hair for over 15 years at salons including Rocco Altobelli, Urban Retreat, and Salon 71, while Hoffman brings years of financial and business experience to the table.

Liv & Reed celebrates its grand opening this weekend with an opening party featuring refreshments, small bites, and music, plus the chance to meet the salon’s stylists, owners, and designers. The full-service salon offers a “happy hour” special from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays of ten percent off all services, including haircuts, color, manicures, and pedicures.

6-8 p.m. Thu. Free. Liv & Reed Salon, Lake Calhoun Center, 3033 Excelsior Blvd., Suite G20, Mpls., 612-345-7249, livandreed.com.
