With its new collaboration with Wit & Delight, Hygge & West has gotten into the bedding business. The celebrated Minneapolis-based wallpaper brand known for its artist-designed products recently debuted a new line of wallpaper and bedding designed by Wit & Delight’s founder, Kate Arends. With the addition of the new line—which follows collections of boldly patterned shower curtains, throw pillows, and fabric that launched late last year—Hygge & West is on its way to becoming a full lifestyle brand.

“We’ve been thinking about bedding for a long time—it’s another great way to add pattern to a room, much like our wallpaper,” says Hygge & West co-owner Aimee Lagos. “We always try to find people whose work and aesthetic we love, and we’d been fans of Kate and Wit & Delight for some time.

For Wit & Delight, the feeling was mutual. “Décor is about 70 percent of what we talk about on Wit & Delight, so the partnership felt like a natural fit from the beginning,” says Arends. “Developing bedding that added personality and style to the bedroom felt like a great way to collaborate with a company known for pattern and texture.”

The collection comprises four stylish prints, available in eight bedding colorways and a dozen shades of wallpaper that can be mixed and matched. For the patterns, Arends was inspired by some of her personal mementos, such as handkerchiefs. The graphic prints include a medallion-like design inspired by a vintage Moroccan tile, whimsical hydrangeas, a modern take on folk florals, and manicured topiaries. “They’re steeped in tradition, but with a modern twist,” she says.

The process of creating the line was highly collaborative, from design to production. Lagos says that Arends’s background in graphic and product design—including a product line with Target—made her an ideal partner when it came to understanding the production methods and limitations involved in getting the products manufactured. But it was no easy feat—“We had a very steep learning curve, as bedding design and production is very different than that of wallpaper,” says Lagos. “Patterns that work well on walls may or may not work well on a bed, and vice versa.”

Ultimately, both teams were thrilled with the final product. “The H&W team really understands pattern and we gained a lot of insights in working with them,” Arends says. “It was really fun to work with a company that has such a great design lens and were so collaborative.”
