Splurge vs. Steal: Sun Style

Published:

Summertime calls for a revamp of your hair product beach bag! Remember, the sun is a blazing ball of fire, which can dry out and damage your otherwise luscious locks. Chlorine and salt water don't help, either. Chemicals and minerals can strip away hair color, depth, and shine. Check out my warm-weather favorites to replenish your hair on any budget!

STYLE: beach waves with texture
Spray on damp hair and twist hair into two-inch sections. Diffuse or air dry.

Aussie Sprunch Hair Spray (at right), $4
vs.

Shu Uemura Liquid Fabric Spray, $38

PREVENT: Get glossy, moisturizing sunscreen for the hair
If your hair is color-treated or not, UV protection for the hair is a must. It prevents color from fading and natural hair from turning brassy. Apply to damp or dry hair and reapply every few hours.

Redken UV Rescue Protective Oil, $14
vs.

Kerastase Huile Celeste Shimmering Protective Mist, $39

PROTECT: leave-in conditioner for heat protection and all-day nourishment
Use as a light styling product, detangler, and all-day UV protection. Apply to wet or damp hair before blowdrying.

Neutrogena Silk Touch Leave-In Cream, $6.99
vs.

Number 4 Lumiere d’hiver Super Comb Prep & Protect, $30

TREAT: moisturize and repair sun-scorched hair
Give your hair a big drink, these masques are full of hydration and protein for strong, silky hair. Shampoo and rinse. Use a small amount of the masque for a daily rinse-out conditioner or opt for a 30-minute treatment once a week.

L'Oreal Professionel Absolut Repair Cellular Masque, $31
vs.

Oribe Signature Moisture Masque, $60
