Get Nautical

Anyone who has talked makeup with me knows that I’ve been a longtime MAC fan. So when I got the chance to chat with NYC senior artist Fatima Thomas here in Minneapolis, I jumped at it.

We spent quite a bit of time talking about MAC, playing with the new collection, and then talking books and politics. (I guess we really hit it off!)

I love MAC for a few reasons, but mostly for its long-wearing formulations, which never dry out my skin—Fatima promises that even at your “most svitzy” the power point or pro longwear lines from the company will stay put. (I can vouch for this.)  And then there’s fact that each color is so true to the product in the package—what you see is what you get. And the marketing brilliance of MAC—what keeps us coming back—are their stellar limited-edition collections.

This spring/summer is no exception. Hey, Sailor! Is based on the glamour of pinup girls, and the colors are fittingly nautical. Think navy blues, deep Kelly greens, beachy bronzers, and bright red lips. (The packaging is a smart navy-and-white stripe, a departure from the usual black.) If you’re crazy about perfect, true reds, then run, don’t walk, to snatch up the the Send Me Sailing lipglass. It’s everything a red gloss should be. I also love their Sun Tints, which have an SPF of 20. They have a really nice, smooth, nonsticky texture, and the colors are always so pretty. I’ll be snapping them up in each of the colors. (Right now, I’m wearing the nude-ish Sea Mist.)

“This is a citified beach look,” Fatima told me. “It’s slicker. For instance, the bronzer is less glittery, more satiny. It creates glow.”

And she has a little advice: “Try something different! Bright, pure color; juicy pastels. Play.”
