Irish Pubs and Plays

Make a night at the theater and out on the town into an Irish affair—on this week’s episode of Moveable Feast, Rachel and John have tips for embracing the luck of the Irish downtown. Start the evening off by stopping at the Guthrie to see Juno and the Paycock, the last play to be directed by the theater’s soon-to-depart artistic director Joe Dowling, an epic tale following a family’s survival in Dublin.

Then head into Dan Kelly’s Pub for some Irish fare after the show. The owners of the Republic recently purchased the pub and revamped it with their “better bar” concept. The new menu provides a lighter and more nuanced take on traditional Irish food. The kitchen sources local ingredients and emphasizes scratch cooking.

For fresh spin on a classic bangers and mash, Rachel recommends trying the Dublin Coddle. The hearty chicken potpie and lamb stew are delicious picks as well, all sered in a more intimate atmosphere than that of Kieran Folliard’s huge, buzzing downtown pubs.
