Drink of the Week: The Third Bird’s Bird Bath

Published:

The three martini lunch was once a thing. Executives would tell their secretaries to forward all calls to the service—take a message. I’m out for the day. Buckets of vodka with the word “vermouth” whispered their way would disappear and everyone would drive home in a beast of a car without any seatbelts. As alluring as the episodes of Mad Men make this bygone era look, it’s probably much better to live in the now.

In fact, today might be the last time we experience some tropical temperatures and The Third Bird on Loring Park is open for lunch (and happy hour and dinner and beyond, actually). Toast the temperatures and the Thursday-ness of this short week with a salt garnished Bird Bath.

This cocktail is a take on a classic margarita, dressed up for the modern age. Del Maguey Alipus San Andres Mezcal might be a mouthful to say, but it’s better to just put it in your mouth and not say a word. Rated as one of the Best of the Best by Tequila.net, this mezcal brings a crystalline purity to the glass followed by threads of sultry smoke. Shaken with tart, dry curacao, freshly squeezed lime juice and kissed with a honey syrup, there the drink is tart, dry, juicy, and wonderfully balanced. It’s that smokiness that lingers. Mingled with the salty rim, it’s a cocktail that pairs beautifully with food. I’d suggest ordering this (for $12) to enjoy alongside this roast chicken with stuffing for a full and beautiful lunch that won’t ruin you for the rest of the day.
