Description

February 9-March 30, 2019 | Opening Reception: February 9, 6-8 pm

The Catherine G. Murphy Gallery proudly presents an exhibition by two Minnesota artists: ceramicist Monica Rudquist and her mentor, sculptor Judy Onofrio.

Rudquist and Onofrio share an interest in materiality, repetition of form and redefining space through an assemblage of smaller parts. Obvious visual parallels can be drawn between their work, including a monochromatic palette, large-scale installation methods and an aesthetic rooted in vessel-like forms. Each artist also explores the concept and role of accumulation in her art practice: Onofrio assembles structures made from found and cast animal bones, creating complex structures out of individual parts; Rudquist cuts down her wheel-thrown pieces and reassembles them into dynamic compositions she mounts on the wall. For both artists, the objects that make up their works are imbued with power that both Onofrio and Rudquist harness in distinct ways.

The opening reception and exhibition are free and open to the public. Accumulation is presented in celebration of Claytopia, the 53rd annual conference for the National Council on the Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA), taking place in Minneapolis March 27-30, 2019.
