“...With Alive & Kickin an audience celebrates the determination to perform and to inspire. There is something universal in the performing arts that we often don't name, but I believe that something is a human need to make joyful noise and be recognized.” -Graydon Royce, StarTribune

(MINNEAPOLIS)—Alive & Kickin, features a cast ranging in age from 65 to 93 “years young” who will take audience members on rollercoaster ride of emotional both visually and musically. The thirty-three member ensemble, led by award-winning Artistic Director Michael Matthew Ferrell and Co-creator/Musical Director Jason Hansen, present Flashback, a high-energy musical theatre experience that artfully brings together an array of personal stories centered around the power of triggered memories along with a musical tribute to the many unforgettable artists that left us too soon. The group, founded in 2010 has been performing to sold out crowds at the Bloomington Center for the Arts for the last four years, and is backed by a full-blown R&R band with Twin Cities finest musicians. Together they join forces in playing music from many of the ‘greats’ who passed before their time, such as Janis Joplin, Michael Jackson, Hank Williams, Kurt Cobain, Patsy Cline and Amy Winehouse.  “It’s a rollercoaster ride. We have audience members moved to tears during one song, and then at the next turn we are all dancing in the aisles!”, said Ferrell, Founder and Artistic Director for the non-profit organization.

Ferrell, who has spent the last several decades of his career working with the brightest and the best of the TC theatre scene, founded the organization after watching the documentary Young at Heart. Joined by music prodigy, Jason Hansen who is also known for his work with Children's Theatre Company, The Guthrie and Theater Latté Da, among others, the duo bring together the top Twin Cities professionals in the theater and music scenes to support the cast. The team includes 5 musicians, 3 costumers, a production team, videographer, photographer and more to produce the event. “We bring our stage knowledge and connections, and they do the rest. The seniors’ work is shocking, moving and raw...all the elements of exceptional live theatre.”, said Hansen.

The production process is not for the faint of heart. Each season begins more than 18 months out as Ferrell and Hansen craft the show concept and begin selecting music. Music rehearsals are 4 hours per week, 50 weeks per year and members are required to learn and memorize more than 20 songs 6 months prior to show opening. Each member also works for weeks writing a personal story that relates to the theme of the upcoming show. Their work is reviewed in collaboration with Ferrell and then recorded as a voiceover for the show.

Ferrell’s commitment to the cast is a personal one. “The positive social change that has taken place in our country is because of this generation. Women’s rights, civil rights, gay rights...the past 50 years alone is astounding and personally moving to me. This is a way for us to honor and celebrate all seniors and their progress.”, said Ferrell. “To be seen and heard allows them to share their work while also fighting ageism.”, said Ferrell. “It is the most important thing I have done in my career.”

“Flashback” promises a rock concert like you’ve never seen before. Tickets are available now at www.aliveandkickinmn.org, by phone at 952-563-8575 or in person at the box office.
