      FORT SNELLING FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES 2017 UPPER POST TOURS

      The Fort Snelling Foundation, a volunteer-based organization

      dedicated to preserving the culture and history of Fort Snelling,

      has announced its 2017 Upper Post tour schedule.

      All tours are free, although a $10 donation is suggested and much

      appreciated. Space is limited and tickets are required.

      2017 Tour Schedule

      May 21 – 9:00 – 11:00 AM

      Fort Snelling Biking Tour: Influence of the Confluence

      Join us for a two-hour biking tour of the Fort Snelling area,

      from the area of indigenous people to soldier’s arrival to

      build Fort Snelling and the growth of the Twin Cities. Tour will

      have a brisk pace to cover a lot of territory over paved trails.

      Not appropriate for young children.

      Meet at the Historic Fort Snelling parking lot. 200 Tower Avenue,

      Saint Paul, Minnesota 55111

 

      May 28 – 9:00 – 11:00 AM

      Upper Post Walking Tour: Whiskey, a Great Horse

      Tour will cover the environs of the famed horse Whiskey, who

      lived on the post from 1921 until his passing in 1943. See

      pictures of Whiskey and his trainer, Lieutenant Hazelrigg, and

      take your own then & now photos of places where Whiskey lived and

      served. We’ll visit Whiskey’s grave at the end and have a

      little salute to the only horse buried at Fort Snelling with full

      military honors.

      This is a walking tour and will cover rough terrain. We'll meet

      at the corner of Bloomington Road and Colville Avenue by the

      soccer fields. For those that want to take the light rail to the

      tour, the gathering spot is less than a quarter mile from the

      Fort Snelling Light Rail Station on the Blue line.

      June 11 – 9:00 – 11:00 AM    

      Upper Post Walking Tour: Flag Day, 1942

      The year is 1942 and America is at war with the Axis Powers. Just

      six months prior, Pearl Harbor had been attacked and the country

      sent reeling from a series of battles, some won and some lost.

      Hear the stories of Fort Snelling’s role as your

      grandparent’s generation geared up for war and celebrated their

      first Flag Day amidst the uncertainty of a cloudy future.

      This is a walking tour and will cover rough terrain. We'll meet

      up at the HQ building--look for the clock tower across from the

      ball fields. For those that want to take the light rail to the

      tour, Headquarters building is just a quarter mile from the Fort

      Snelling Light Rail Station on the Blue line.

      July 2 – 9:00 – 11:00 AM    

      Upper Post Walking Tour: A Murder Mystery

      Nothing paranormal here! Join us for a real life murder mystery,

      still unsolved to this day. We’ll discuss the life and times of

      a young lady who was murdered on the post in 1940.

      This is a walking tour and will cover rough terrain. We'll meet

      up at the HQ building--look for the clock tower across from the

      ball fields. For those that want to take the light rail to the

      tour, Headquarters building is just a quarter mile from the Fort

      Snelling Light Rail Station on the Blue line.

      August 20 – 9:00 – 11:00 AM

      Upper Post Walking Tour: World War I

      The year is 1917 and America has just entered the Great War,

      joining forces with Great Britain, France, and Italy to fight

      against Germany and Austria. Join us for the 100th anniversary of

      the War To End All Wars and hear of Minnesota’s efforts to gear

      up and win over there!

      This is a walking tour and will cover rough terrain. We'll meet

      up at the HQ building--look for the clock tower across from the

      ball fields. For those that want to take the light rail to the

      tour, Headquarters building is just a quarter mile from the Fort

      Snelling Light Rail Station on the Blue line.
