In conjunction with our annual "A Toast to George Washington" event, Minnesota Masonic Charities and the Minnesota Masonic Heritage Center is proud to present a show that highlights the Great Debates of 1858 between aspiring-Senator Abraham Lincoln, and successful incumbent Senator Stephen R. Douglas.
Bringing the debates to life are actor-interpreters George Buss as Lincoln and Tim Connors as Douglas. Buss has served for 30 years as a Lincoln interpreter and recently was named to deliver the most famous Address annually at Gettysburg. Connors has performed as Douglas for nearly a decade and appeared at all seven original debate sites during the 2008 Sesquicentennial of the Debates. The two men have appeared together on numerous occasions to reprise the roles.
This historical perspective will touch upon topics from all seven debates, with the focus on the divisive topic of slavery. As is well known, Lincoln would go on to use the topic as a central theme of his eventual presidency.
