This event occurs every 2 week(s) on Sunday, Saturday and Sunday.
Join us this holiday season for the timeless tale of Clara’s fantastic voyage to the Land of the Sugar Plum Fairy with her magical godfather Drosselmeyer. With choreography by Riet Velthuisen and Tchaikovsky’s classic music, Continental Ballet Company’s Nutcracker Ballet has delighted audiences of all ages throughout Minnesota.
Under the direction of Riet Velthuisen, the Continental Ballet Company’s Nutcracker is a traditional staging with professional dancers. The casting for this season has some surprises with new company members and apprentices. Clara will danced by Michaela Macauley and the Nutcracker Prince will be Benjamin Olson. The Sugarplum Fairy will be danced by Kacey Southwick and the Cavalier is Wesley Rocha. The ballet will be performed for two weekends at the Schneider Theatre in the Bloomington Center for the Arts before going on tour. The Nutcracker is a timeless ballet that has been a part of the classical repertoire since the late 1800’s.
This production of the Nutcracker is a full-scale classical production and it is appropriate for children and adults alike. The narrative varies slightly from the original story in that there is no battle scene. Founder/Director Riet Velthuisen says, “There is enough violence in the world today. I don’t want it to be part of the ballet.” This production tells the same story but with a friendly encounter with rats instead of a fight. Riet Velthuisen’s choreography is precise and inspiring, reflecting her European heritage.
$25 for adults, $19 for students and seniors, $13 for children under age 13
