Ornaments: A Minnesota Growing Season

Jun 8, 2017 to Jul 30, 2017

This event occurs daily, every 1 day(s).

Exhibiting Artist: Emily Donovan

June 8 – July 30, 2017
Opening Reception: Thursday, June 8, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

“Nature provides us with ornaments that bloom in rich tones, brightening our landscape especially after a long Minnesota Winter.” – Emily Donovan

By collaborating with gardeners in her neighborhood, artist Emily Donovan creates homemade dyes from their native plants to create unique colors that vary in rich tones for her lush and flowing paintings. Donovan’s technique, similar to Batik, utilizes the dye and beeswax on paper, a process that is both historical and more environmentally safe than the use of manufactured dyes and pigments.

Donovan sees this series of work as a type of modern day botany journal which documents the plants, the colorful dyes, and the individual community gardeners she has worked alongside to both seed and harvest for her art making practice. Throughout the process Donovan has also become more aware of the natural cycles since gathering materials for dyes is dependent on weather and growing seasons. This project was supported with the assistance of a Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative grant.

About the Artist:
Emily Donovan is a Twin Cities based artist who explores nature in her mixed media paintings by creating her own colors from plant-based materials. She received her BA in Studio Arts and Art History at the University of Minnesota and continues her studies, nationally and internationally with other natural dye enthusiasts to add to her repertoire of colors from nature. Emily was the recipient of an Artist Initiative Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board (2015) and her work has been exhibited in galleries and art centers including Gallery 360, Minnetonka Art Center, The Textile Center, Hopkins Center for the Arts, and at Wintertide, a juried exhibit at Public Functionary (2015). She works and exhibits at her studio at the Northrup King Building in Northeast Minneapolis, where she regularly hosts demonstrations about using natural dyes in her art.
