Michael Kareken - "Salvage"

Sep 7, 2012 to Oct 13, 2012
12:00 PM until 05:00 PM

Groveland Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibition of new paintings and drawings by Minneapolis artist Michael Kareken. Kareken, who teaches painting at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, has received numerous awards including the Bush Foundation Artists Fellowship as well as Minnesota State Arts Board and Arts Midwest grants. In 2010, Kareken’s acclaimed solo exhibition, Scrap, was featured in the MAEP gallery at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.

In this exhibition, Kareken continues to explore images of refuse and scrap materials. Kareken has shifted his focus from recycled paper and bottles to salvaged auto parts: the twisted cables of car engines; crushed door panels, their skeleton-like interiors stripped of their speakers and locks; limp and tattered airbags lying in heaps, reminding the viewer of the fragility of both the car itself and the occupants who once drove it. Kareken investigates his subject from several perspectives, drawing the viewer’s attention to the architecture and engineering of these graveyard cars while also demonstrating their likeness to the human body.

The artist will be present at the opening reception on Friday, September 7 from 5-8 p.m. This opening reception and exhibition run concurrently with the exhibition in the Annex, Respite, by Jean Gumpper.
