The Long and Short of It
What to do when you’re ready to lop off your hair and start again
Who: Susanne Weber, 43, registered nurse
THE STORY: After years of wearing long hair, Susanne was ready to donate it to Locks of Love. To ensure that the cut would still look feminine, we called Justine at Root Salon, who perused Susanne’s photos of Michelle Williams and Carey Mulligan’s close crops for inspiration.
OUR STYLIST'S TAKE: “We wanted to find lines that would suit Susanne’s new haircut—something femme to bring out her features and highlight her athletic body, but also something that would also fit her lifestyle. Call it everyday-fashion practical magic.”
JUSTINE'S TAKE: “Susanne’s hair transformation was jaw-dropping for everyone, including me! Susanne is a natural beauty; I wanted to give her a style that looked effortless, but let her shine.”
FIRST IMPRESSIONS: “I freaked out a little at first about the hair—it’s dramatic! I have gotten so many compliments and I like it now. I loved the clothes—it’s a confidence-booster to put beautiful clothes on that fit properly. I don’t often get my hair and makeup done, so that was a total treat!”

- BEFORE: Susanne preferred loose-fitting, athletic-leisure wear and a low-maintenance, long hairstyle (right).
- Face-framing layers bring out her bright green eyes and spotlight her fine features.
