Foreign workers can be an asset to your business. However, you need to know how to hire them legally. The laws are complex. Sam Myers and Elizabeth Thompson of the immigration law firm Myers Thompson, P.A., both recognized as “Best Lawyers,” are legal experts in the field. With 50 years of combined experience, they have an extensive knowledge and understanding of nearly every type of immigration issue an employer may face. “This enables us to base our fees on flat rates, so our clients can predict and budget costs,” explains Elizabeth.
Practicing together continuously since 1985—the longest lasting partnership of practicing immigration lawyers in the Upper Midwest—they helped shape the passage of the Immigration Act of 1990, the most comprehensive change to the Immigration and Nationality Act since 1952. They are so dedicated to their work, and their clients, they have traveled to Washington, D.C. and acted as advocates for their clients’ interests, testifying before Congress and the Legislature.
Concentration: Immigration and nationality law
Note-worthy Accomplishments: Sam is past president of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) and a 25-year member of AILA’s board of governors. He presently serves as vice chair of Minnesota’s Advocates for Human Rights, founded the William Mitchell College of Law Immigration Law Clinic, and is an adjunct faculty member teaching immigration law at the U of M. Elizabeth, also a long-standing member of AILA, participated in the creation of the U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement (precursor to the NAFTA) and continues to be a leader in that area of immigration law, having managed all aspects of immigration for corporate clients in mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures.
