Summer Sweet Tooth

Twin Cities foodie Sue Zelickson shares her favorite summertime treats

Summer cookouts often include roasted marshmallows, so why not throw in a box of all-natural gourmet varieties from North Mallow? Choose vanilla bean, caramel swirl, chocolate chip, or mocha bean and eat them plain, on a stick, or smooshed inside upscale s’mores. Be the first on your block to secure North Mallow’s Build Your Own S’more Bar for graduations, mitzvahs, and special parties. Maybe your sweet tooth prefers jelly candies, such as the ones found in Europe. Well, check out what Amy and Zoie Glass have been up to at St. Paul’s Lucille’s Kitchen Garden. Already purveyors of marvelous jams available in supermarkets, they have now created a line of pâte de fruits—delicious French jelly candies. Combining forces with Stillwater’s Poorboy Candy, they also offer a new caramel sauce. For baked goods, there’s no need to heat up the kitchen when you’re yearning for a special pie (or two). Sara Hayden’s Tipsy Pies are hand-rolled, heart-shaped crusts filled with fruits and splashed with craft beer, wine, or spirits to make them, not you, a little tipsy. Find them at major supermarkets, online, and at the State Fair this fall.
