Hamlet and FELA!—On Stage and On Screen
Want to experience the best of the British stage without the hassle of international travel? National Theatre Live makes that contradiction possible. By broadcasting live, high-definition performances of plays onto cinema screens worldwide, theater lovers can enjoy a genuine theater experience from the local comforts of the Guthrie in Minneapolis. Audiences are also treated to behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with artists.
Tonight, the Guthrie presents an NT Live filmed performance of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Directed by Nicholas Hytner, the performance will feature Rory Kinnear as Hamlet, the grief-stricken prince of Denmark determined to avenge his father’s murder. The performance also stars David Calder as Polonius, Clare Higgins as Gertrude, Patrick Malahide as Claudius and Ruth Negga as Ophelia.
Next Thursday, NT Live will present FELA!. This bold performance delves into the true-life story of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-KutiNigerian (Sahr Ngaujah). As a pioneering artist and a political activist, his soulful Afrobeat rhythms inspired a generation. FELA! has become one of most critically acclaimed new musicals on Broadway, boasting 11 Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical.
