Face Forward

One of the Twin Cities’ best aestheticians opens up her own spa

There are aestheticians, and then there are facial fairy godmothers. Sonja Boatman is of the latter category. She smoothes on various masks and applies hot towels and steam; she examines your pores and extracts from them with a deft touch, leaving you with glowing, youthful, radiant skin.

Once an aesthetician to the stars at the Beverly Hills Hotel, and then queen aesthetician at The Beauty Room, Boatman has now opened up her own quiet, private studio space, and it’s a lovely retreat from the daily hustle.

Housed in a little strip with other wellness companies, the spa is actually just two cozy rooms—the waiting room features her star skin-care line, Hylunia, and little gift items, such as Comphy Co spa linens, Lafko candles, Tweezerman tweezers, and more.

There are a couple really specific reasons you should book an appointment. One is the carefully selected skin-care line, Hylunia. It’s perfect for sensitive skin or people who watch ingredient lists: all the products are organic and safe, staunchly anti-paraben, and have no added scent or dyes. The Day Face Lotion boasts a larger percentage of the Alteromonas Macledii extract that earned La Mer its fountain-of-youth status, but for far less. I also fell deeply in love with the colloidal silver lavender toner—it’s antibacterial and I imagine it smells like the south of France. The second reason is Boatman’s massage—one of the best I’ve had. Her reflexology is a gift from the heavens.
