Why should I consider a dental implant over a traditional denture or bridge?

The main advantage of a single dental implant is that it looks and acts like a natural tooth without involving the teeth on either side. Patients that wear dentures often have trouble with speech and eating. They are embarrassed to go out in public because their denture moves and is not comfortable. Implants can secure the denture to the jaw bone allowing patients to eat the foods they enjoy and smile confidently in social situations.

Apart from brushing and flossing correctly, what, in your opinion, is the most valuable thing a person can do to support his or her dental health?

The best prevention, other than good home care, is early detection. This can be done with regular dental visits. Routine cleanings, exams and x-rays can diagnose problems early on and your dental team can help you with the best solution.

Would you like to add anything else?

Most dental professionals want you to be happy and offer treatment suggestions that are in your best interest. Insurance coverage is a benefit. Your dental insurance coverage is NOT determined by your dental needs. Dental insurance issues are very complex and your dental office should try to help you maximize your dental benefits while not compromising treatment.

Apart from brushing and flossing correctly, how can we best take care of our pearly whites?

Visit your dentist on a regular basis! Don’t wait until a small problem becomes a big issue.

What’s the difference between various whitening options on the market today?

In-office whitening is the most popular cosmetic dental procedure in the world. Unlike home-use whitening systems that incorporate low-dose bleaching agents, in-office whitening (aka power bleaching, power whitening, professional whitening, or chairside whitening) takes place under carefully monitored conditions which allow for the safe, controlled, pain-free use of a relatively high concentration of bleaching gel—yielding results that are visible immediately. Cost reflects the equipment/time and results (anywhere from five to seven shades whiter, in general).

What’s the difference between an an implant and a bridge?

Implants allow for an independent tooth supporting the bone in that location, whereas a bridge connects three or more teeth together. (If the bridge fails, you lose three teeth.) You can brush and floss an implant as you would any other tooth. With a bridge, you need threaders to clean under them.

What’s a veneer?

A veneer is an eggshell-thin porcelain piece bonded to the front of your tooth.  They are very pretty. People of all ages get veneers, but many adults in their 40s and 50s get them to look better for work, or repair years of discoloration
or damage.

Other than location, what’s the difference between the three dental offices you supervise?

I supervise  Alpine Dental in Crystal, Minnetonka Dental in Minnetonka, and Comfort Dental in New Hope. All three offices have independent identities, but the common thread connecting all three is the level of care, expertise, customer
service, and technology.

What are the benefits of same-day crowns?

Because the dentist and the dental assistant design the crown themselves and then mill it in the office while you wait, you are getting the best fit possible for the crown—which means that the margins around the gumline are comfortable and protect the tooth and gums from decay and infection. By not sending the case out to a lab, we are ensuring the best materials and clinical outcomes for our crown patients.

How would you describe your team?

I think the experience of thorough care is just as important to today’s dental consumer as the clinical treatment itself. A dental team with a vision for empathy—a team that provides comfortable care and excellent natural outcomes—is essential in providing comprehensive care. I feel very fortunate to have a staff of people who share that vision with me.

What dental advice would you like to share with our readers?

Much is understood about the “system” that is made up of the teeth, gums, bite, jaw joints, jaw bones, muscles of the face, ligaments, chewing function, and smile aesthetics.  They are all related and intertwined. My advice is that if you want the best care in dentistry—make sure your provider is evaluating your mouth as this system. Seek comprehensive care, not just “tooth to tooth” crisis dentistry.

What’s the connection between oral health and overall health?
Can going to the dentist actually save your life?

Statistically, only half the population who needs dentistry seeks it out. This is unfortunate, because dentistry has led the way in health care by teaching prevention. We provide true health care in addition to treating disease. Teeth don’t regenerate like the rest of our body, and because of that, special care and attention is needed to keep them healthy. For many, it’s a simple formula of regular professional cleanings and exams. Early detection of disease keeps the treatments less invasive, inexpensive, and successful. Studies have shown that good oral health is directly related to better overall health, lowering your risk for cardiovascular disease. At Linden Hills Dentistry, we take pride in our role of helping people obtain a healthy lifestyle.
