The maker movement is still going strong—and now major department stores are jumping on the handcrafted, artisanal bandwagon. Following last year’s launch of West Elm’s Local program, Herberger’shas debuted Close to Home, a section filled with handmade products by local artisans from each store’s surrounding community. Local offerings include Minnesota-themed tees and sweatshirts by Sota Clothing and Northmade Co., natural beauty and skincare by Kiyi Kiyi Cosmetics and Dirty Knees Soap Co., steel bottle openers shaped likes states by 14Gauge, and hand-poured soy candles by Excelsior Candle Co. The department is now open in seven Twin Cities stores, including Rosedale, Southdale, and Northtown Mall in Blaine, and will be coming to additional Herberger’s locations throughout greater Minnesota later this year. •bonton.com/sc1/close-to-home
