Outside of the metro, Minnesota’s charming lakeside towns are better known for their antique stores and idyllic views than modern fashions and home goods. But the opening of the trendy Wild Ruffle in Prior Lake (located about 25 miles southwest of Minneapolis) is changing that notion.

Wild Ruffle began more than five years ago as a style blog penned by the shop’s co-owner Cate Mezyk, then a stay-at-home mom. In 2013, she joined with friend Tammy Hiveley, a fashion designer with a background in retail management and buying, to host pop-up shops in Prior Lake. Nearly two years ago, they opened their first storefront.

When a larger space opened in a prime corner in downtown Prior Lake, the pair jumped on the chance to expand. The new store features handmade goods from many of the Minnesota makers from its previous location, including hand-poured soy candles by Excelsior Candle Co., wall art by Allison Marie Designs, jewelry designed by Mezyk, and Minnesota-themed t-shirts. New additions include inspirational tees and baby onesies by Faith & Finn, stylish diaper bags by Austin | Fowler, a selection of handmade skincare products, and women’s clothing with a feminine, bohemian feel, including fringed dresses in paisley prints and off-the-shoulder folk-inspired tops.

Wild Ruffle is just one of many new shops that have sprung up along Prior Lake’s Main Avenue, including modern home-and-gift shop LoveFeast—which carries Minnesota-made Kiki Koyote jewelry and Da Bomb Fizzers bath bombs—a storefront from sporty headband startup UrbanHalo, and clothing and home shop the Vintage Gypsy.
