With Memorial Day fast approaching on Monday, May 28, it’s time to start considering plans to make the most out of your long weekend. There is no shortage of events taking place throughout the Twin Cities, whether you're looking to spend some time reflecting on history and paying respect to those who fought for our country, or are just looking forward to relaxing and socializing while enjoying the warm weather.

Lakewood Cemetery’s 100th Anniversary of WWI’s End

Spend some time at the Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis for a family-friendly celebration of the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. The event begins at 10:30 a.m. with a ceremony honoring veterans, and will continue through 3 p.m. with special activities including live music from Minnesota Community Sings and the Selby Avenue Syncopaters, walking tours, and an exhibit exploring life for Minnesotans who lived during the WWI era. You can also take a scenic trolley ride through Lakewood’s beautiful gardens, as well as a horse-and-carriage ride offering great views of Lake Bde Maka Ska.

Yosemite Park’s Flag Row

Beginning Friday, May 18, the curbs of Yosemite Park in Golden Valley will be lined with hundreds of American flags honoring fallen soldiers. Locals are encouraged to drive, bike or walk down the streets to view the display of flags until it ends at approximately 5 p.m. on Memorial Day.

Historic Fort Snelling Military Reenactment

Located in St. Paul, the Historic Fort Snelling will celebrate Memorial Day with special re-enactments of America’s military history, including costumed staff and re-enactors showcasing soldiers in combat. The fort will also be providing activities during the weekend leading up to Memorial Day, with engaging stories of Native American and African American history, expansion in America, as well as cannon firing and blacksmithing demonstrations. The events take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday through Monday, and you can purchase tickets here.

Surly Brewing Co. Slay Day 2018

If you’re looking to hang out on a patio and enjoy a grill out, stop by Surly Brewing Co.’s beer garden on Sunday, May 27, where the brewery will be launching their new summer beer, HeatSlayer, while hosting live music and yard games. You can snag a 21+ ticket here, which offers all-you-can-eat brats, pretzels, popsicles, and more, as well as unlimited pours of HeatSlayer in a commemorative glass you get to take home, lasting from 1 p.m to 5 p.m.

Soundset Music Festival

Minnesota’s annual hip-hop music festival, Soundset, will be celebrating its 10th anniversary at the State Fair Grounds on Sunday, May 27. The lineup consists of 40-plus artists, includes Minnesota’s own Atmosphere, as well as Logic, Migos, Jaden Smith, and the Wu-Tang Clan. Gates for the event open at 11 a.m, with performances lasting through the evening until 9:30 p.m. Tickets for the music-filled day are available here.
