Young People’s Ofrenda: Expressions of Life and Remembrance
Minnesota high-school students create their own "ofrendas" as inspired by world cultures and art
A deeply personal, moving exhibition of student work, "Young People’s Ofrenda: Expressions of Life and Remembrance" is the result of a unique partnership between the MIA and Austin High School, Thomas Edison High School, El Colegio High School, and Humboldt Secondary School. The students explore the reverence many cultures of the world show for ancestors through art, as well as Day of the Dead traditions in Mexico. Drawing on these inspirations, the students create personal ofrendas (offerings)—altars or shrines to honor friends, family, or community members who have passed away.
