Sue Z.'s Charitable Check-In: November

Sue Z.'s ideas for getting charitable this month include baking with North Minneapolis teens and the annual Taste of the NFL

Bake Cookies with Teens

WHAT: Cookie Cart Pre-Holiday Deal
WHEN: Through November 22
WHERE: The Cookie Cart, 1119 W. Broadway, Minneapolis

A non-profit bakery in North Minneapolis is baking more than 8,000 dozen cookies, available for pick-up from the bakery on West Broadway or to ship anywhere in the world. Make gift-giving easy and help give back through this empowering, enriching program offered to the teens employed at the cart.
WHY: It’s a sweet pre-holiday deal on decorated holiday-themed and traditional cookies—with a 10-percent discount if you act soon.
INSIDER INFO: Be sure to mention or enter code EARLYBIRD2017 when ordering before November 22 to get a 10-percent discount. Holiday gift boxes are also available and hold up to two dozen cookies. They include a special holiday card with the purchaser's custom message. And if you’re looking for a way to give back, volunteer shifts are available as a fun way for family, friends, and holiday visitors to better know their community, working alongside the talented, dedicated cookie-cart teens and staff. For opportunities, contact Rosie Henderson at 612-843-1943, or rhenderson@cookiecart.org.

To order cookies, go online at cookiecart.org or call Alex Kotlarek at 612-843-1947

Kick Hunger in 3 Courses

WHAT: Taste of the NFL
WHEN: November 18, 6 p.m.
WHERE: Sheraton Bloomington Hotel, 5601 W. 78th St., Bloomington

After a cocktail hour and socializing, retired Viking Ben Leber hosts a celebrity chef–studded evening. A special chef-designed, three-course meal comes with wine pairings, and a “VIP guest” is seated at each table.
WHY: The party-with-a-purpose, back in its 27th year, is the shindig to attend the night before the Super Bowl. It might be $100 per person (and $750 for a table), but the proceeds go to St. Paul’s Second Harvest Heartland, which works to kick hunger with its food shelter. Your dinner, prepared by chefs from as far as Los Angeles, helps local families access affordable food.
INSIDER INFO: Along with the Edina Chamber of Commerce, Lela, the southwest-metro dining destination and go-to meetup for area businesses, is helping to put on this annual “who’s-who” evening. That makes it, at its heart, a locally focused event.

Dancing for a Cure

WHAT: Breath of Life Gala
WHEN: November 18, 5:30 p.m.
WHERE: Hyatt Regency, 1300 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis

Come dance to live music, bid on prizes, and tuck into a fabulous dinner—all proceeds going to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
WHY: You'll make a difference for those suffering from cystic fibrosis and discover the many research efforts. You'll also get to hear the story of the Wilcox family, this year's featured Bid for a Cure speaker, as they relate how the foundation helped their daughter Emma Jo when she needed a double lung transplant at age 15.
INSIDER INFO: Come for the pre-event reception silent auction, different from the lively live auction later in the night with WCCO's beloved Don Shelby as the emcee.

And catch me with Jordana Green and Paul Douglas on WCCO Radio the last Thursday of the month, at 8:30 a.m. and 4:45 p.m.—where I'll dish about more food and philanthropy opportunities.
