Weisman Art Museum

Description:

The work of world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, this glimmering stainless steel structure, which won Gehry the Progressive Architecture Design Award, serves as a teaching museum for the University of Minnesota. Inside the impressive structure, you’ll find 17,000 works of early 20th Century American and contemporary art, including ones by artists such as Georgia O’Keefe and Marsden Hartley. Although the University of Minnesota began amassing an art collection in 1934, the Weisman Art Museum, as it now stands, didn’t take shape until 1993 when namesake Fredrick R. Weisman donated $3 million to fund it. Known for his designs of the Guggenheim Museum in Spain, Experience Music Project in Seattle and Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, this is the only art museum Gehry designed—and later returned to expand—in the United States.
