Enchanted Forest: Forêt opens for business on the web

Amy Marver, a former art historian and a new transplant to our fair Minnesota, has opened an understatedly fresh antiques shop called Forêt. Currently only available here, Marver says she’s on the hunt for a bricks and mortar shop in the Twin Cities to complement her warehouse of European furniture and decorative objects from the eighteenth, nineteenth,... Celebrity Sighting!

Having been a huge HGTV buff for probably about as long as I’ve been walking, I was thrilled to meet Candice Olson, host extraordinaire from HGTV’s Divine Design and national spokesperson for Silestone. Olson made a quick stop in the Twin Cities last Friday to speak at a design seminar, sponsored by Silestone, which began at the Oakdale Prom Center and continued at the Woodbury showroom. Olson touched on everything from the top kitchen and bath requests today—modernizing/updating and luxury spa baths—to high-impact/low-budget projects. She ended her Minneapolis whirlwind stop with a public appearance at the Mall of America. Read more »

Sidewalk Style

I love being surrounded by stylish, beautiful things, but I want to manage it without breaking the budget. One event that helps me out is Russell+Hazel’s Annual Sidewalk Sale. I just can’t get enough of the retailer’s fun colors, trendy patterns, and versatility. What better tool for an editor than a hard-covered binder with a pocket for business cards? June 27th and 28th from 9 a.m.–5 p.m., you’ll find items from discontinued collections, and scratched/dented and overstocked goods discounted... Read more »

Rugs to Love

I have a bit of a rug obsession. So trust me when I tell you that, when it comes to rugs, Richard Rehl is the master. The owner of Aubry Angelo can find or design just about any magic carpet you can imagine. He showed me a few of his recent finds at his IMS showroom the other day, and they are some of the most unique rugs I’ve ever seen.

The Turkish runner ($5,000), hanging on the wall, is the showstopper. The... Read more »

For the Distinguished Dad: Divine Marquetry Maps

Here’s a luxe gift for your father’s office or study: inlaid maps by Minneapolis woodworker Dan Bredemeier. The 41-by-64-inch map of the world, above, is custom framed in padauk. It features 123 different wood veneers, including koa (used for the Hawaiian islands), coppery kewazinga (for Greenland), tamo ash (for Khazakstan), amboyna burl (for the Borneo islands), and shimmering quilted maple (for the oceans). Bredemeier has dabbled in inlaid maps since 1991, but it wasn’t until he exhibited at the Minnesota State... Read more »

Curb Appeal with Attitude

If you’ve ever wanted an 18-foot-high squid or buffalo spray-painted on the side of your house, here's your chance. Acclaimed Minneapolis stenciler John Grider (who works under the name Broken Crow) has put a call out on www.brokencrow.com for home and business owners with outdoor walls to spare. The former City Pages’ Artist of the Year—his best-known painting is the massive billy goat on the side of Salon Stella in Northeast—has painted three houses in Minneapolis thus far. He’ll be painting a fourth in London this month. It takes Grider... Read more »

Walk About

Finally, finally, I’m out digging in the dirt—along with 95 percent of Twin City gardeners, to judge from weekend crowds at local garden centers. All of us in manic gardening mode. As always, I resolved to stifle the impulse to buy and try lots of new annuals and perennials. But I still ran all over town in search of the just right colors, varieties, pots, and other garden stuff.

All of this was complicated by an article I read about the Read more »
