Meow: Walker Cat Videos Film Festival

Meow: Walker Cat Videos Film Festival

Modern art isn't for everyone. Neither are real life cats. But cats filmed doing strange, human-like things, viewed at a world-renowned modern art museum? That's gotta be a hit.

Such is the plan this Thursday, August 30 (8:30-9:30 p.m.) at the Walker Art Center. Tourists and locals alike visit the landmark for its architecture, sculpture garden, and array of exhibits and activities—and now, viral cats, showcased via the Internet Cat Video Film Festival happening on the lawn. It's another free Target Thursday night, but also brings to a close the 2012 Open Field season.

"Walker programs examine the questions that shape and inspire us as individuals, cultures, and communities." While it may be a little unclear what questions cats prompt, those who filmed The Standing Cat or The Cute Talking Cat already know it's incredibly intriguing and entertaining to the public. (These two videos alone have raked in almost 30 million YouTube views.)

So here's your motivation to visit the Walker, enjoy free gallery admission, and walk around the sculpture garden and famous Spoonbridge and Cherry... Except you're mainly coming to laugh at cats. (And this time you won't be alone at your computer.) Socializing about an internet phenomena—what's more modern than that?!

If you're open to an entire day of adventure, rent a Nice Ride bike to make your way downtown, swing through the Minneapolis Farmers' Market on Nicollet Mall between 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Thursdays) and bring those treats back to the Walker to enjoy while watching the film festival!

Note: You can take a free audio tour at The Walker at any time. Listen to artists and curators discuss certain works from the collection on your cell phone by calling 612-374-8200 or pointing your mobile browser at walkerart.org. Then look for the Art on Call symbol or pick up a listing.
