Women's Half Marathon, Bloomington

Women's Half Marathon, Bloomington

For some, a girls’ weekend means spas and relaxation. For others it means wine and shopping. And for even others it means sweat and glory. But, if you’re a group of ladies who like to combine all those things, then you better head to Bloomington this weekend for the Women’s Half Marathon. The nation’s largest women’s half marathon series added Bloomington to the docket in 2012, expecting around 5,000 participants on August 26.

“The series has
become one of the most popular and most talked about women's half marathon
series in the country and each of our events typically has anywhere from 46
to 48 states represented,” says Dawna Stone, founder. “We hope both local women and women from outside
the area and outside the state will join us for an incredible event. As with all new Women's Half Marathon locations, we look for a host city that
is perfect for a girls’ weekend. Not only do we want women to have a fabulous
time at our event, but we want them to enjoy everything the host city has to
offer.”

And with tax-free shopping on clothes and shoes at Mall of America, spa treatments at the local hotels, and wine and gourmet cuisine at neighboring restaurants, all in addition to the half marathon, well, that’s one jam-packed girls’ weekend. The free health and fitness expo opens Friday afternoon and runs through Saturday, with the race (a 5K is on the agenda, too, for those who want a shorter run) starting Sunday morning at 7 a.m.

The things to do are endless. Here’s just a sample itinerary:

Friday afternoon: Head over to the expo to grab your race goodie bag and take a peek at what the vendors have to offer.

Friday night: Take the girls bowling at Sky Deck Sports Grille on Level 4 at Mall of America.

Saturday morning: Take in a spa treatment at Progressions Salon or Trillium Spa.

Saturday midday: Shop! Cruise the mall’s 520 stores, stopping in spots like Lululemon or Nike for last-minute race attire. Seek a thrill in Nickelodeon Universe.

Saturday night: Carbo load at Tucci Benucch or Parma 8200. Then get to bed early!

Sunday: Race and recover. Whew! Sounds like a great weekend!

Info: Online registration for the race ends Wednesday, August 22, but walk-ups can register at the expo on Friday and Saturday. The race starts at Normandale Lake Park.
