Hot-tubbing in Minnesota Winters

Get those swimsuits out of storage, everyone. This is the best time of year (despite pasty white skin and yeah, freezing temps) to head outdoors to a hot tub.

There’s something about the instant steam, the contrast of temperatures—and a few wild deer running past don’t hurt—that makes hot-tubbing in Minnesota winters a perfect stress reliever.

winter hottubbing in MinnesotaI’m fortunate to have a jacuzzi in the family, just 30 miles north of the Twin Cities. It’s great for alone time—or a winter party (friends, wine, maybe a little jump in the snow challenge, done deal!). But if you’re not as lucky to have such easy access to your own, or interested in renting (another fabulous gathering idea, tested and approved by yours truly), alternative options in Minnesota are just as good—if not better.

Maplelag Resort in Callaway, Minn., has skiing, skating, fishing, snowshoeing, etc.—and the largest hot tub in the state! Just make sure to request that they open the retractable roof and sliding doors so you get the full, misty experience.

National Forest Lodge, a “peaceful place in the pines” in Northern Minn., has an outdoor hot tub common for relaxation after a sporty day as well.

Larsmont Cottages on Lake Superior has a four-season outdoor whirpool, while Eagle Ridge Resort at Lutsen Mountains has one of the state’s few indoor-outdoor heated pools.

Really, I could go on and on, but as you’ll soon learn in Minnesota Monthly‘s upcoming February travel issue, there are many more Minnesota resorts great for escaping your day-to-day and enjoying this great state in its most recognizable season.

In the meantime, my plan is set: to survive the winter like a fine stew, in simmering style. I can already see the steam rising…
