The Drug We've All Been Waiting For

So what if the economy is in the dumps, home prices are plummeting, and unemployment is skyrocketing. What the world needs now is longer, fuller lashes. Stat.

In December, the FDA approved an eyelash-thickening drug called Latisse. Last week it hit skin clinics and derm offices everywhere. Created by Allergan, the maker of Botox, Latisse is a once-daily prescription treatment that you apply to the base of the upper eyelash—like liquid eyeliner. With consistent use, you can expect to see major lashes in as little as eight weeks. Really, you will (see before/after shots). I've used over-the-counter versions of this product to great effect. In fact, my lashes got so long and crazy, I had to stop. I now use the stuff on my sparse eyebrows instead.

According to the Allergan rep I spoke with, the biggest difference between Latisse and commercial brands is that Latisse is the only FDA-approved product of its kind. Although it's available by prescription only (for $120), that's kind of reassuring considering the potential side-effects: darkening of the eyelid, an itching sensation, and eye redness. In my opinion, the real risk is getting hooked. Once you stop using Latisse, your eyelashes will gradually return to where they were prior to treatment.
