Always a Bridesmaid
I am up to my big brown eyeballs in weddings. I am not complaining. My lovely girlfriends held my train and carried the perfect red lipstick for me, too, many (okay, five) years ago. And I am thrilled to do the same for them. For one of these joyous occasions I have been tasked with selecting the bridesmaid dresses. I was given a few criteria: must be short, chocolate brown, and not too bridesmaid-y. Bless the bride. I don't need anything tea-length, gingham, or chiffon-like in my closet.

One of my first stops was the Priscilla of Boston website, knowing that a store was opening this week in Edina. I had heard about the chic bridal salon from several friends who had shopped it on the East Coast. They liked that the silhouettes were classic, but the styling more couture than typical bridesmaid dresses. Bingo.

I fell in love with this dress (in brown, of course) from the new Vineyard collection of modern, reasonably-priced ($150-250) gowns. That belt and sweetheart neckline are killer, and oh so flattering.

However, before I got around to trying it on, I quite randomly (as it were with all great fashion finds), I came across this dress (in brown, available in stores only) while shopping with a friend at Ann Taylor. I bought it on the spot, sent text messages to the bride and other maids, and crossed my fingers that they'd love it as much as I. The heavy taffeta, the rich and sheeny shade of brown, that sleek strapless bodice and party-poof skirt—perfection!

The AT dress is a go, but I'm still looking forward to visiting the new Priscilla of Boston store. With dresses like this, I can get away with wearing a bridesmaid dress anywhere, can't I?
