Harvest of Art

WHAT: Art Attack
WHERE: Northrup King Building, Minneapolis
WHEN: 5 to 10 p.m.
The largest collection of artists studios under one roof opens up all weekend, with some 200 artists showing jewelry, paintings, photography, ceramics, etc. You’ll also find food trucks, henna body painting, and, in the third floor gallery, Rework Participatory Art Projects, where you can make your own art. Day of Doughty

WHAT: Mike Doughty
WHERE: Fitzgerald Theater, St. Paul, and HUGE Theater, Minneapolis
WHEN: 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.
Mike Doughty, the memoirist and former frontman for Soul Coughing, a literate rock band perpetually popular in the Twin Cities, will make the most of his Friday in the Twin Cities. First he’ll join comic actor Dave Foley (NewsRadio, The Kids in the Hall) in Wits at the Fitzgerald Theater. Play with Laurie

WHAT: Experimental Expressions
WHERE: McGuire Theater, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis
WHEN: 1 p.m.
Laurie Anderson, who’s performing her signature brand of music and monologue both Friday and Saturday at the Walker, will also lead this free workshop for kids on electronic music and experimental performance, sharing the secrets of her unique violin and voice sound. The Cult of Joel

WHAT: The Gizmocrat, MST3K creator Joel Hodgson’s one-man show
WHERE: Parkway Theater, Minneapolis
WHEN: 7 p.m.
Hodgson, who created the cult hit TV show Mystery Science Theater 3000, takes the stage for one night only, sharing photos and videos that shed insight into his creative process, discussing the origin of the MST3K, and screening one of the show’s greatest episodes. The Third Wheel

WHERE: McKnight Theatre at the Ordway Center, St. Paul
WHEN: 2 p.m.
Theater Latté Da, directed by Peter Rothstein, performs this handsome update of Stephen Sonheim’s groundbreaking musical. The plot, such as it is, revolves around the romantically uncommitted Robert, the perpetual third wheel to his properly coupled friends. Dancing in the Dark

WHAT: James Sewell Ballet’s Dance Macabre!

A tongue-in-cheek tribute to Edgar Allen Poe and other dark-siders, this thematic program weaves in references to everything from magicians to Garrison Keillor’s Guy Noir schtick. It’s family-friendly, assuming your family has a bit of Addams lurking in it. Learn more at thecowlescenter.org
